Whey protein, Valrhona cocoa and organic stevia in three small bowls on a beige surface

Why Our Protein Powder Has Three Ingredients

Turn over most protein powders and you will find twenty ingredients or more. Many of them are hard to pronounce.

Ours has three ingredients. True Original has one.

That is not about keeping things minimal. It comes from a choice we make much earlier, when the milk is processed.

Most of those twenty ingredients are there to fix a problem. The problem was created by something else on the list. We do not have that problem, so we do not need the fix.

Why the lists get long

Heavy processing strips out the taste. So flavoring goes in. The flavoring needs something to carry it. So a bulking agent goes in. The powder separates in water. So an emulsifier goes in. It has to taste sweet without sugar. So a sweetener goes in.

Each step makes sense on its own. Someone had a problem and solved it.

Together they explain a lot. They change the texture. They leave an aftertaste. They affect how you feel an hour later. It works like a chain, and it starts with the processing.

You can see it on the back of most tubs. The protein comes first, as it should. Then comes a run of ingredients that make the protein behave.

We start somewhere else

Our whey is cold-filtration processed. That keeps more of what is already in the milk, including the taste.

The milk comes from pasture-raised cows in the French Alps. So we are not rebuilding a flavor that was never lost.

Our powders contain whey. Then Valrhona cocoa or freeze-dried strawberries. Then a little organic stevia. There is nothing else in them.

True Original has no flavoring and no sweetener. It is whey, and that is the whole list.

What we use for sweetness

ESSENTIAL by Protelicious is sweetened with organic stevia. We use nothing else.

Stevia is a sweet extract from a plant. It adds sweetness without adding sugar. It is now one of the most widely used natural sweeteners.

On its own, stevia can taste strong. So we use a small amount. It sits alongside the whey and the cocoa or strawberry, and the flavor stays balanced.

What is not in it

Our "not in it" list is longer than our ingredient list. No added sugar. No artificial flavors. No additives. No gluten. And it is made from non-GMO ingredients.

What we test for

A short ingredient list does not prove a powder is clean.

In October 2025, Consumer Reports tested 23 protein powders and shakes. More than two-thirds held more lead in one serving than experts consider safe for a whole day. Three went over their limit for cadmium.

The same tests compared plant protein with dairy. Plant-based powders averaged nine times the lead of dairy proteins like whey. Dairy options generally had the least.

Heavy metals come from the soil and the supply chain. They do not come from added ingredients. So the length of the list tells you nothing about them.

Our whey is third-party tested for heavy metals. Third-party matters here. The lab has nothing to gain from the result. Our own test and an independent test are not the same thing.

What you get

Up to 20g of protein per serving. Less than 2g of lactose. And a taste you will actually enjoy.

Three things to take away

  • A long ingredient list is usually a sign of heavy processing.
  • The choice that matters happens early, at the processing stage.
  • Ask what your protein powder is tested for, not just what is on the label.

Frequently asked questions

Why do protein powders have so many ingredients?

Heavy processing strips out the taste, so flavoring goes in. The flavoring needs carrying, so a bulking agent goes in. The powder separates in water, so an emulsifier goes in. Each one fixes a problem created by something else on the list.

What is in Protelicious protein powder?

Whey, then Valrhona cocoa or freeze-dried strawberries, then a little organic stevia. That is three ingredients or fewer. There is no added sugar, no artificial flavors and no additives. True Original is whey on its own.

What sweetener do you use?

Organic stevia, and nothing else. It adds sweetness without adding sugar.

Is protein powder tested for heavy metals?

Not all of it is. Consumer Reports tested 23 protein powders in 2025. More than two-thirds held more lead per serving than experts consider safe for a day. Heavy metals come from the soil and the supply chain, not from added ingredients, so a short ingredient list is no protection. Our whey is tested by an independent lab.

Is Protelicious gluten-free?

Yes. It is gluten-free and made from non-GMO ingredients. There is no added sugar, no artificial flavors and no additives.

How much protein and lactose are in a serving?

Up to 20g of protein per serving, and less than 2g of lactose.
